Anyone ever seen a gearbox that warns you not to fill til overflow? I've always filled transmissions until a little gear oil drips out of the filler, but this car warns you not to do that. Since I only lost a bit of oil (was changing a CV boot) I estimated what was in the catch pan and filled it up that much.
Definitely something I've never seen before.

what kind of car? Usually that is what you do, pull the fill plug and fill till it comes out, or till it comes out the level hole

2006 Renault Laguna. A sticker right next to the filler warns you not to fill it up to that level. I checked and there's no other way to check the level or put oil into it.

Probably drain completely and fill a given volume from empty.

I've seen it a number of times. I just stuck a hose in and pumped it till it stopped coming out then added to the factory fill amount.

Yeah that's what I assume. The owner didn't want to pay for a full bottle of gear oil though.
